Together, We Tend
Together, We Tend
Complete 10 puzzles of increasing difficulty in this grid-based solarpunk story! In the year 2055, the UK government started the Greenbound Initiative, a nation-wide project to embrace a sustainable future and solarpunk vision. Starting with small villages, communities were encouraged accept and incorporate green technologies and rewild areas, all while maintaining a thriving culture. Together, We Tend tells the story of one of these villages.
This is a game I made for the Day Zero Games: Solarpunk Jam 2025. Almost everything was created from scratch by myself, including the game design, art and code, and was inspired by another solarpunk-themed game I previously made for a previous jam, although nothing was reused from that project. The only premade assets used were the following:
Path in the forest by folk_acoustic (https://pixabay.com/music/solo-guitar-path-in-the-forest-149256/)
Folies Bergere Font (Medium) by Dimitri Antonov (https://fontesk.com/folies-bergere-font/)
Stifly Font by Namara Creative Studio (https://fontesk.com/stifly-font/)
After discovering the concept of solarpunk a few years ago after reading the Monk and Robot series by Becky Chambers, I'd always wanted to create something within the genre. I wanted to highlight a more ground-level side to solarpunk, with an achievable glimpse into the bright near-future. I wanted to focus on the regeneration of tight-knit communities that support themselves through sustainability rather than highlighting lavish technologies. I try to represent this through having to move characters within each level as though they are one unit.
As with most game jams, I was limited with the content I could add to the game. I set out to create 20 levels and incorporate a few more puzzle mechanics, but I was unable to do so within the limits of the jam. Also, the visuals don't quite live up to the mental image I had for the game; I would have loved to have added buildings and trees to make these levels feel more village-ey.
